Proposal Description
Constructed in 1849, it was one of the earliest schools set up by the Chinese community in Singapore. Located beside the Tian Hock Keng Temple on Telok Ayer Street, it once housed the Chong Hock Girl's School which only moved out of the premises in 1981. Chong Wen Ge underwent major restoration works in 2001 and was re-opened in 2003.
A concept plan proposal for a Heritage Gallery showcasing the social history and contributions of the Hokkien community in Singapore was developed for the Hokkien Association. The site includes the historical timber pagoda, with the Heritage Gallery spread over two levels and consists of a permanent exhibit, a flexible event space, administrative office, shop and refreshment stand, and outdoor garden.
